At the RAD Recreation Adapted Society, we believe a paralyzing injury doesn’t mean the end of an active, outdoor lifestyle. In fact, we know that with the right support and equipment, an independent and adventurous life is still entirely possible.
From skiing and watersports to hiking, gym workouts, and biking—there are incredible adaptive devices out there that make it all accessible again. The problem? They’re expensive. Outrageously expensive. We’re talking tens of thousands of dollars—just to get back to the basics of life and sport.
That’s where RAD Society comes in.
We exist to eliminate financial barriers to adaptive recreation by providing access to high-cost adaptive equipment at low-cost rental rates. No loans. No interest. Just access.
OUR VISION
A world where people with short-term and permanent mobility challenges can live active, outdoor lifestyles—surrounded by friends, family, and community—regardless of financial circumstance.
OUR MISSION
To make outdoor recreation in British Columbia accessible for independent-living individuals with mobility issues by offering an inventory of adaptive equipment available for affordable rentals across the province.
MORE THAN JUST GEAR
RAD also offers peer support and post-injury assistance. If you or someone you love is navigating a life-altering injury, reach out. We’ll come to your town, offer guidance, and even help organize a fundraiser to support recovery and transition.
We’re not just a gear library—we’re a community that shows up when it matters most.
WHY WE FUNDRAISE
As author Jodi Picoult wrote:
“Heroes didn’t leap tall buildings… their superpowers were as simple as listening, or loving.”
When Tanelle Bolt—our founder—sustained a burst fracture to her T5-T6 vertebra and became a paraplegic, her community became her lifeline. That support inspired the creation of RAD Society, so that others could experience the same strength in numbers.
Today, we raise funds through:
-
Golf tournaments (like the Ugly Pant Classic)
-
Community events (like the RAD Polar Plunge)
-
Individual and corporate donations
-
Volunteer-led fundraisers
This is what keeps our GearBoxes growing, our events running, and our community thriving.
